1. IS 2745:1983 NON-METAL HELMETS FOR FIREMEN AND CIVIL DEFENSE PERSONNEL

This standard lays down the requirements regarding materials, construction, workmanship and finish, weight and performance of helmets for the firemen and civil defense personnel. Helmets shall be of the size having circumstances of inside headband as 530, 540, 550, 560, 570, 580, 590,600, 610 and 620 mm. A tolerance of 3 mm for the size of the helmet shall be permitted. Mass of the complete helmet excluding visor may not exceed 800 g and if it exceeds, the mass to the nearest 30 g shall be marked. Among performance requirements Shock Absorption, Penetration Resistance, , Strength of Retention System , Electrical Resistance, Water Absorption and Flammability Resistance have been specified.

2. IS 2925:1984 – INDUSTRIAL SAFETY HELMETS

This standard lays down the requirements regarding material, construction, workmanship and finish and performance requirements of helmets intended to provide protection against falling objects and other hazards which may be encountered in mining, tunneling, quarrying, ship building, construction projects and similar other industrial occupations. Helmets shall be in sizes 520, 530, 540, 550, 560, 570, 580, 590 and 600 mm. These sizes may be generated out of one or more shells or one or more headbands. The size adjustment range shall be clearly marked on the helmet. The surface of the helmet shall be finished smooth, free from burrs; sharp edges shall be removed to ensure proper surface contact of all fittings. All metal parts including rivets shall be smooth and free from sharp or rough edges or projections. Among performance requirements Shock Absorption Resistance, Penetration Resistance, Flammability Resistance, Electrical Resistance, Water Absorption, and Heat Resistance have been specified.

3. IS 9562:1980 – NON-METAL HELMETS FOR THE POLICE FORCE

This standard lays down the requirements regarding materials, construction, workmanship and finish, weight and performance requirements of helmets for the police force. Helmets shall be of the sizes having circumference of inside headband as 530. 540,550,560,570,580, 590,600,610 and 620mm. A tolerance of + 3 mm for the size of the helmet shall be permitted. All external surfaces and edges shall be smooth and rounded and there shall be no metallic parts or other rigid projections on the inside of the helmet. Mass of the complete helmet excluding visor shall not exceed 950 g and if it exceeds, the mass to the nearest 30 g shall be marked. Among performance requirements Shock Absorption Test, Penetration Resistance, Plumb-Bob Test, Strength of Retention System, Rigidity Test, Water Absorption Test, Flammability Resistance and Firing Test have been prescribed.

The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued an order, making it mandatory for non-metallic helmets mentioned above to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, shall mandatorily carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence. In short, it has become obligatory for all the manufacturers of non-metallic helmets, whether in India or overseas, to immediately apply for BIS licence and obtain a valid BIS certification licence before that the last date of implementation of the order, i.e., 22 April 2024.
