BIS Certification for Drums as per IS 13997, IS 1783 (PART 1 AND 2), IS 2552, IS 3575, IS 916 AND IS 10325

INDIAN STANDARDS
1. IS 13997:2014 DRUMS, LARGE OPEN TOP
This standard covers the requirements for steel open top drums of 200 litre [180 kg] nominal capacity with bottom end fixed in the following types of construction: a) Grade A — Drums of steel sheets of nominal thickness 1.25 mm for body and end, with bottom seam of either double seam construction or spiral/triple seam construction and top full size openable drum lid. b) Grade B — Drums of steel sheets of nominal thickness 1.00 mm for body and end, with bottom end seam of spiral/triple seam construction and top full size openable lid. The minimum gross capacity of the drums measured with water at ambient temperature shall be 210 litre with lid fitted on the drums. The body and ends of both Grade A and Grade B drums shall be made from cold reduced carbon steel sheets conforming to Grade CR1, CR2 or CR3 of IS 513. The side and the bottom joints shall be water-tight.
2. IS 1783 (PART 1): 2014 DRUMS LARGE, FIXED ENDS – GRADE A
This standard (Part 1) covers the requirements for Grade A steel drums of 200 litre nominal capacity with fixed ends with the following type of construction: a) Type 1 — Drums of steel sheets of nominal thickness 1.25 mm for body and ends with end seam resistance welded and double seam construction. b) Type 2 — Drums of sheets of nominal thickness 1.25 mm for body and ends, with end seam of triple/spiral seam construction. The body and ends of the drums shall be made from cold reduced carbon steel sheets conforming to Grade CR1, CR2 or CR3 of IS 513. Apart from dimensions, leakage test, drop test and hydraulic pressure tests are prescribed.
3. IS 1783 (PART 2) :2014 DRUMS LARGE, FIXED ENDS — SPECIFICATION: PART 2 GRADE B DRUMS
This standard covers the requirements for Grade B mild steel drums of 200 litre — nominal capacity with fixed ends with the following types of construction: Type 1 — Drums of sheet thickness 1.25 mm for body and ends, with end seam of double seam construction; and Type 2 — Drums of sheet thickness 1.00 mm for body and ends, with end seam of spiral seam/triple seam construction. The minimum gross capacity of the drums measured with water at ambient temperature shall be 210 litres. Body and ends of the drum shall be made from mild steel sheet conforming to Grade CR1, CR2 or CR3 of IS 513. Apart from dimensions, leakage test, drop test and hydraulic pressure tests are prescribed.
4. IS 2552:1989 STEEL DRUMS (GALVANIZED AND UNGALVANIZED)
This standard prescribes the requirements of mild steel ( galvanized and ungalvanised) drums with fixed ends of nominal capacity ranging from 3 to 150 litres. The drum shall be designated by nominal capacity and grade A1, A2, B1, B2 and C depending upon steel sheet thickness. Apart from dimensions, leakage test, drop test and hydraulic pressure tests are prescribed.
5. IS 3575:1993 BITUMEN DRUMS — SPECIFICATION
This standard covers requirements for steel drums with fixed ends of nominal capacities 160 litres and 200 litres used for packing of bitumen having penetration value of 225 and below. The body shall be strengthened by 12 corrugations which shall be symmetrical to central line. Apart from dimensions, air pressure tests has been prescribed.
6. IS 916:2000 SQUARE TINS FOR SOLID PRODUCTS
This standard prescribes the requirements of square tins of 18-litre nominal capacity used for packing of solid products. Body may be a two-piece construction, soldered at the diagonally opposite seams or a single-piece welded seam construction. The welded seam shall be covered with a suitable lacquer on the inside and outside. Apart from dimensions and tolerances, handle pull test and air pressure tests are prescribed in the standard.
7. IS 10325 :2000 SQUARE TINS – 15 KILOGRAMS OR LITRE FOR GHEE, VANASPATI, EDIBLE OILS AND BAKERY
This standard specifies the requirements for 15 kg/ litre square tins used for packing of ghee, vanaspati, edible oils and bakery shortenings (or nitrogen dispersed edible oils). Standard grade single cold-reduced electrolytic tinplate of nominal thickness 0.28 mm conforming to IS 1993 or standard grade double cold-reduced electrolytic tinplate of nominal thickness 0.21 mm conforming to IS 13954 shall be used for the body ends and capseals on lids of tins. Apart from dimensions and tolerances, finish, air pressure test, handle pull test and hydraulic pressure test have been prescribed in the standard.
QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE, MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, GOVT. OF INDIA ON 17 OCTOBER 2023 FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION
The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued an order, making it mandatory for all drums and canisters to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, shall mandatorily carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence. In short, it has become obligatory for all the manufacturers of draums and canisters, whether in India or overseas, to immediately apply for BIS licence and obtain a valid BIS certification licence before that the last date of implementation of the order, i.e., 16 April 2024.
