BIS Certification for Aluminium conforming IS 734, IS 740, IS 7902, IS 739, IS 2067 and IS 16011

Quality assurance is paramount in any industry, ensuring that products meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance. For the aluminium industry, adhering to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification is imperative to guarantee the quality of various aluminium products. In this article, we’ll delve into the significance of BIS certification for a range of aluminium products, including forging stock, rivet stock, wire, and foil, and how Omega QMS Pvt Ltd aids businesses in obtaining this certification.

INDIAN STANDARDS

IS 734:1975 – WROUGHT ALUMINIUM AND ALUMINIUM ALLOYS, FORGING STOCK, AND FORGINGS FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING PURPOSES

IS 734:1975  covers requirements for forging stock and forgings of aluminium and aluminium alloys in various conditions for general engineering purposes. Apart from chemical composition, the standard covers requirements for tensile strength, elongation and 0.2 percent proof stress.

IS 740:1977 – WROUGHT ALUMINIUM AND ALUMINIUM ALLOY RIVET STOCK FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING PURPOSES

IS 740:1977 covers requirements for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys rivet stock for general engineering purposes. Apart from chemical composition, the standard covers requirements for dimensions, tensile strength and  elongation.

IS 7902:2001 – ALUMINIUM ALLOY FORGING STOCK AND FORGINGS (ALLOY 24345) FOR AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS

IS 7902:2001 covers the requirements of aluminium – copper – magnesium – silicon – manganese alloy (Alloy 24345) forging stocks (billets, bars, rods, sections) and forgings. The material is intended primarily for aircraft structural parts requiring moderate strength. Besides chemical composition  , the standard covers requirements for dimensions and tolerances, tensile strength , hardness, elongation and 0.2 percent proof stress.

IS 739:1992  WROUGHT ALUMINIUM AND ALUMINIUM ALLOY WIRE FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING PURPOSES

IS 739:1992 lays down the specifications for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy wire used in general engineering applications. This standard dictates criteria for wire diameter, mechanical properties, and other essential characteristics to ensure that the wire performs reliably in a wide range of engineering applications.

IS 2067:1975 – WROUGHT ALUMINIUM WIRE FOR ELECTRICAL PURPOSES

IS 2067:1975 covers the requirements of aluminium wire for electrical conductors, and specifies the chemical composition , mechanical properties, electrical resistivity, and other general requirements.

IS 16011:2012 – ALUMINIUM AND ALUMINIUM ALLOY FOIL FOR PHARMACEUTICAL PACKAGING

IS 16011:2012 covers the requirements of aluminium and aluminium alloy-bare / coated / laminated foil for pharmaceutical packaging applications. It is applicable for 0.020 mm (20 µm) to 0.040 mm (40 µm) foil thicknesses. The aluminium and aluminium alloy foil play an important role in pharmaceutical packaging due to their unique barrier properties. Packaging with these foils exclude moisture, oxygen and other gases, micro-organisms and light, thus maintaining sensitive products in peak condition for long periods. Their various properties provide a convenient, safe and versatile packaging format for tablets, creams, liquids and powders covering an enormous variety of pharmaceutical products. Apart from preferred thicknesses and dimensions and tolerances, the standard covers requirements for pinhole count, bursting strength, peel strength, scaling strength etc.

QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE, MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, GOVT. OF INDIA ON 25 SEPTEMBER 2023 FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION

The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued an order, making it mandatory for all aluminum products mentioned above  to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, shall mandatorily carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence.  In short, it has become obligatory for all the manufacturers of aluminum and aluminum alloy mentioned above, wherein in India or overseas, to immediately apply for BIS licence and obtain a valid BIS certification licence before that the last date of implementation of the order, i.e., 24 March 2024.

BIS CERTIFICATION SCHEME

The BIS Standards, IS 734, IS 740, IS 7902,  IS 739, IS 2067 and  IS 16011, establishes a comprehensive framework encompassing various quality parameters that aluminum and aluminum alloys must adhere to. The Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Scheme is a vital framework established by the Indian government to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of products available in the market. This scheme aims to safeguard consumer interests by setting stringent benchmarks and guidelines that products must meet before they can be deemed compliant. BIS certification covers a wide range of industries and products, encompassing the entire gamut of industrial and manufacturing activity.  Various steps involved in the BIS Certification process are enumerated below:

  • Standard Identification: Manufacturers identify the relevant BIS standard that applies to their chosen product category. These standards outline the specific quality, safety, and performance requirements that the product must meet.
  • Application Submission: Manufacturers submit an application for BIS certification to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), providing details about the product, its specifications, and the desired certification mark.
  • Factory Inspection: BIS conducts an inspection of the manufacturer’s production facility to assess the quality control processes, infrastructure, and adherence to relevant standards.
  • Sample Testing: BIS collects samples of the product from the manufacturer for testing in authorized BIS laboratories or recognized testing centers. These tests evaluate various parameters specified by the BIS standard.
  • Certification Decision: Based on the satisfactory test results and compliance with standards, BIS decides whether to grant certification to the product. If approved, the manufacturer is issued a BIS certification license.
  • Regular Monitoring: BIS monitors the manufacturing process of certified products through periodic audits and market surveillance to ensure ongoing compliance with quality control processes and standards.
