BIS Certification for Shallow Corrugated Asbestos Cement Sheets and Fibre Cement Flat Sheets as per IS 14682:2000 AND IS 13008:1990

BIS Certification for Shallow Corrugated Asbestos Cement Sheets and Fibre Cement Flat Sheets as per IS 14682:2000 AND IS 13008:1990

In the realm of construction materials, ensuring quality and safety standards is paramount. Among the diverse materials used, asbestos and fibre cement sheets hold significant importance due to their widespread application in roofing and cladding. However, to safeguard against potential hazards and ensure optimal performance, adherence to established standards is essential. This is where BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification plays a pivotal role, offering assurance of quality, durability, and safety.

INDIAN STANDARDS

IS 13008 :1990 SHALLOW CORRUGATED ASBESTOS CEMENT SHEETS

This standard covers the requirements for materials, dimensions and tests for shallow corrugated asbestos cement sheets. The products shall be composed of an inert aggregate consisting of clean asbestos fibre including suitable other fibres cemented together either by 33 grade ordinary portland cement or Portland slag cement or Portland pozzolana cement. Pozzolanic materials, pigments and fillers which are compatible with asbestos cement may be added. The sheets may be left in their natural colour or colouring matter may be added in the composition Pigments which are embodied in asbestos cement for colouring purposes shall be of permanent colour.  Load Bearing Capacity, Impermeability are the major requirements specified for flat sheets. The finished product, when delivered, shall have a rectangular shape, smooth surface on the weathering side, a good appearance and shall be free from visible defects. The corrugations shall be true and regular. The edges of the sheets shall be straight and clean.

IS 14862:2000 FIBRE CEMENT FLAT SHEETS

This standard covers the characteristics and establishes methods of control and test as well as acceptance conditions for fibre cement flat sheets. It covers sheets intended for external applications such as cladding facades, curtain walls, soffits, etc, and sheets intended for internal use such as partitions, floors, ceilings, etc, with a wide range of properties appropriate to the type of application. These sheets may have either a smooth or textured surface. Fibre cement flat sheets consist essentially of an inorganic hydraulic binder or a calcium silicate hinder fanned by the chemical reaction of a siliceous material (includes ground silica, pulverized fuel ash and amorphous silica) and a calcareous material reinforced by organic fibres and/ or inorganic synthetic fibres. The inorganic hydraulic binder shall be either 33 grade ordinary Portland cement  or 43 grade ordinary Portland cement or 53 grade ordinary Portland cement or Portland Pozzolana cement (fly ash based)  or Portland Pozzolana cement (calcined clay based) or rapid hardening Portland cement or Portland slag cement. Process aids, fillers and pigments which are compatible with fibre reinforced cement may be added. Flat sheets covered by this standard shall be of two types, namely, Type A and Type B. Type A sheets are intended for external applications where they may be subjected to the direct action of sun, rain and/or snow. They may be supplied coated or uncoated. Type B sheets are not subjected to the type tests and are intended for internal applications and external applications where they will not be subjected to the direct action of sun, rain and/or snow. 1be sheets are further classified into five categories according to their modulus of rupture. Straightness of edges, squareness of edges, Bending Strength, Apparent Density, Water Impermeability, Frost Resistance are some of the mojor requirements specified for sheets.

QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE, MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, GOVT. OF INDIA ON 06 MARCH 2024 FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION

The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued an order, making it mandatory for all asbestos cement sheets  to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, shall mandatorily carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence.  In short, it has become obligatory for all the manufacturers of asbestos cement sheets, whether in India or overseas, to immediately apply for BIS licence and obtain a valid BIS certification licence before that the last date of implementation of the order, i.e., 05 September 2024.

BIS CERTIFICATION SCHEME

The BIS Standards, IS 13008 and IS 14862, establish a comprehensive framework encompassing various quality parameters that asbestos cement sheets must adhere to. The Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Scheme is a vital framework established by the Indian government to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of products available in the market. This scheme aims to safeguard consumer interests by setting stringent benchmarks and guidelines that products must meet before they can be deemed compliant. BIS certification covers a wide range of industries and products, encompassing the entire gamut of industrial and manufacturing activity.  Various steps involved in the BIS Certification process are enumerated below:

  • Standard Identification: Manufacturers identify the relevant BIS standard that applies to their chosen product category. These standards outline the specific quality, safety, and performance requirements that the product must meet.
  • Application Submission: Manufacturers submit an application for BIS certification to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), providing details about the product, its specifications, and the desired certification mark.
  • Factory Inspection: BIS conducts an inspection of the manufacturer’s production facility to assess the quality control processes, infrastructure, and adherence to relevant standards.
  • Sample Testing: BIS collects samples of the product from the manufacturer for testing in authorized BIS laboratories or recognized testing centers. These tests evaluate various parameters specified by the BIS standard.
  • Certification Decision: Based on the satisfactory test results and compliance with standards, BIS decides whether to grant certification to the product. If approved, the manufacturer is issued a BIS certification license.
  • Regular Monitoring: BIS monitors the manufacturing process of certified products through periodic audits and market surveillance to ensure ongoing compliance with quality control processes and standards.
