BIS Certification for Steel Pipes, Bars, Wires and Tubes as per IS 15155:2020, IS 16651:2017, IS 6392:2020 AND IS 6913:1973

In the ever-evolving landscape of industrial production, ensuring the quality and safety of materials is of paramount importance. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) plays a crucial role in this aspect, offering certification for various products to meet predefined quality benchmarks. In this article, we will delve into the significance of BIS certification for four specific steel products, namely, IS 15155: 2020, IS 16651: 2017, IS 6392: 2020, and IS 6913: 1973. Additionally, we will explore how Omega QMS Pvt Ltd can be a valuable partner in obtaining BIS certification.

INDIAN STANDARDS

IS 15155: 2020 – BAR/WIRE WRAPPED STEEL CYLINDER PIPES WITH MORTAR LINING AND COATING INCLUDING SPECIALS

IS 15155: 2020 covers the requirements of bar/wire wrapped steel cylinder pipes with mortar lining and coating with nominal internal diameter in the range of 250 mm to 1 900 mm. Pipes of diameter beyond 1 900 mm may be supplied by mutual agreement between purchaser and manufacturer. Apart from dimensions and tolerances, standard prescribes requirements for  Hydrostatic Test for Steel Cylinder of Pipe, Pipe Test at Factory, Permeability Test on Coating, Repair of Lining and Coating , Boiling Absorption Test on Coating Mortar, Pressure Permeability Test on Coating etc.

IS 16651: 2017 – HIGH STRENGTH DEFORMED STAINLESS STEEL BARS AND WIRES FOR CONCRETE REINFORCEMENT

This standard covers requirements and describes methods of test for high strength deformed stainless steel bars/wires of the following strength grades, for use as concrete reinforcement: a) SS 500, b) SS 550, c) SS 600, and d) SS 650. NOTE — The values following the symbol SS indicate the specified minimum 0.2 percent proof stress or yield stress in N/mm2 . This standard applies to solid stainless steel bars/ wires in which the deformations/ribs have been formed by cold working or hot rolling processes. This standard also applies to hot rolled steel without subsequent heat treatment, or to hot rolled steel subsequently annealed and cold worked. The production process is at the discretion of the manufacturer. This standard also applies to reinforcing bars/wires supplied in coil form but the requirements of this standard apply to the straightened product. Deformed stainless steel reinforcing bars/wires produced by rerolling finished products such as plates, or from material whose metallurgical history is not known and fully documented is not acceptable in this standard.

IS 6392: 2020 – STEEL PIPE FLANGES

This standard covers the requirements for cast, forged and plate or flat steel pipe flanges of the following types for use in industry for oil, water, steam, air, gas and chemical services: a) Integral, b) Welding neck, c) Plate, d) Screwed boss, e) Slip-on boss, f) Loose flanges for welded-on lapped pipe ends ; and g) Blank. This standard does not specify limitations on the use of various methods of attachment of flanges to pipe or other equipment. The adequacy for operating conditions of any method of attachment specified should be determined by the designer of the piping or equipment.  The types and materials of gaskets used shall be agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer. This Standard applies to flanges of the following class designations : Classes 0.1, 0.25, 0.60, 1.0, 1.6, 2.5, 4.0, 6.4, 10.0 and 16.0. The class designations represent the primary service pressure ratings of the flanges in newtons/millimetre square

IS 6913: 1973 – STAINLESS STEEL TUBES FOR THE FOOD, BEVERAGE, DAIRY AND PHARAMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY

The food and beverage industry demands utmost hygiene and corrosion resistance from its equipment, making stainless steel tubes a vital component. IS 6913: 1973 outlines the specifications for stainless steel tubes specifically designed for use in this industry. Apart from dimensions and tolerances, the standard prescribes requirements for chemical composition, surface finish, heat treatment, tensile, hardness, reverse flattening, hydrostatic test.

QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE, MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, GOVT. OF INDIA ON 21 JULY 2023 FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION

The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued an order, making it mandatory for all steel products mentioned above to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, shall mandatorily carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence.  In short, it has become obligatory for all the manufacturers of above steel products, wherein in India or overseas, to immediately apply for BIS licence and obtain a valid BIS certification licence before that the last date of implementation of the order, i.e., 24 March 2024.

BIS CERTIFICATION SCHEME

The BIS Standards, IS 15155, IS 16651, IS 6913 and IS 6392, establishes a comprehensive framework encompassing various quality parameters that above mentioned steel products  must adhere to. The Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Scheme is a vital framework established by the Indian government to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of products available in the market. This scheme aims to safeguard consumer interests by setting stringent benchmarks and guidelines that products must meet before they can be deemed compliant. BIS certification covers a wide range of industries and products, encompassing the entire gamut of industrial and manufacturing activity.  Various steps involved in the BIS Certification process are enumerated below:

  • Standard Identification: Manufacturers identify the relevant BIS standard that applies to their chosen product category. These standards outline the specific quality, safety, and performance requirements that the product must meet.
  • Application Submission: Manufacturers submit an application for BIS certification to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), providing details about the product, its specifications, and the desired certification mark.
  • Factory Inspection: BIS conducts an inspection of the manufacturer’s production facility to assess the quality control processes, infrastructure, and adherence to relevant standards.
  • Sample Testing: BIS collects samples of the product from the manufacturer for testing in authorized BIS laboratories or recognized testing centers. These tests evaluate various parameters specified by the BIS standard.
  • Certification Decision: Based on the satisfactory test results and compliance with standards, BIS decides whether to grant certification to the product. If approved, the manufacturer is issued a BIS certification license.
  • Regular Monitoring: BIS monitors the manufacturing process of certified products through periodic audits and market surveillance to ensure ongoing compliance with quality control processes and standards.
