BIS Certification for Slicing Machines under QCO 2026

Electric slicing machines — used for slicing meat, cheese, bread, vegetables, and other food items in homes and commercial food preparation environments — are covered under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2026 — commonly referred to as QCO 2026. BIS certification is mandatory for all slicing machines before they can be sold or imported in India.

Covered Products

Slicing Machines
Electric Shredders (related food preparation category)
Electric Food Processors (related category)

Applicable Indian Standard

IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 — Household and Similar Electrical Appliances — Safety: Part 1 General Requirements (technically equivalent to IEC 60335-1: 2020).

Key Requirements Under Scheme-I

BIS licence under Scheme-I mandatory before any sale or import
Product testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory against IS 302 (Part 1): 2024
Factory inspection and audit by BIS
ISI marking required on every certified unit
Ongoing surveillance audits to maintain licence validity

Blade Guard and Access Protection

Slicing machines incorporate exposed rotating blades that pose severe laceration hazards. BIS testing under IS 302 places particular emphasis on blade guard design, interlocks that prevent operation without guards in place, and protection against accidental blade access during operation and cleaning. Machines with inadequate blade guarding or guards that can be easily bypassed are among the most commonly rejected products in this category. Importers must ensure blade safety systems are robust and fully evaluated before formal BIS submission.

Why This Category Matters

Slicing machines are used in delicatessens, hotel kitchens, supermarkets, and home kitchens across India. The severe injury risk from exposed blades makes this a high-priority BIS enforcement category. Non-compliant slicing machines found in the market after October 2026 are subject to seizure and penalties under the BIS Act, 2016.

Key Exemptions

Exemption 01

Export manufacturing

Goods manufactured domestically solely for export are exempt.

Exemption 02

R&D imports

Up to 200 units per year may be imported for R&D without BIS certification, provided they are not sold commercially. Year-wise records must be maintained.

Exemption 03

Existing stock

Declared stock held by a BIS-certified manufacturer (or one who has applied) may be sold for up to six months from the implementation date, subject to a declaration to BIS.

Conclusion

Slicing machines are explicitly listed under QCO 2026. The severe laceration risk associated with rotating blade equipment makes blade safety validation a critical pre-testing requirement. Importers and manufacturers must begin BIS applications without delay.
