BIS Certification of Resin Treated Compressed Wood Laminates as per IS 3513 (Part 1, 2 and 3)
In the realm of modern engineering, materials innovation has been a cornerstone for advancements across industries. One such innovation that has revolutionized electrical, chemical, and general applications is Resin Treated Compressed Wood Laminates, commonly referred to as Compregs. These specialized laminates have found their place in various sectors due to their exceptional properties and versatility. The Indian Standards, specifically IS 3513 (Part 1):1989, IS 3513 (Part 2):1989, and IS 3513 (Part 3):1989, delineate the standards and specifications for using Compregs in electrical, chemical, and general purposes, respectively, ensuring their safe and efficient use.
INDIAN STANDARDS ON RESIN TREATED COMPRESSED WOOD LAMINATES
IS 3513 : Part 1:1989 (Resin treated compressed wood laminates (compregs) – Specification Part 1 For electrical purposes
IS 3513 : Part 2:1989 (Resin treated compressed wood laminates (compregs) – Specification Part 2 For chemical purposes
IS 3513 : Part 3:1989 (Resin Treated Compressed Wood Laminates (Compregs) – Specification Part 3 : For General Purposes
Resin Treated Compressed Wood Laminates have made remarkable contributions to the electrical industry, enabling the creation of reliable and safe electrical components. IS 3513 (Part 1):1989 focuses on the use of Compress in electrical purposes, providing stringent guidelines for their manufacturing and usage.
These laminates possess excellent dielectric properties, making them ideal for insulation in electrical devices and equipment. They exhibit high resistance to electrical breakdown and can withstand high voltage levels without any adverse effects.
Chemical industries demand materials that can withstand harsh environments, corrosive chemicals, and extreme temperatures. IS 3513 (Part 2):1989 governs the use of Compregs in chemical purposes, providing guidelines to ensure their suitability and durability in such demanding settings.
The corrosion resistance of Compregs makes them a valuable asset in chemical industries. They are used in the construction of tanks, vessels, and other equipment that come in contact with corrosive substances.
Beyond specialized domains like electrical and chemical industries, Compregs have proven to be versatile materials for general applications. IS 3513 (Part 3):1989 covers their use in general purposes, setting standards to ensure their quality and performance across a wide range of applications.
From furniture to packaging, from automotive components to architectural elements, Compregs find their utility due to their combination of mechanical strength, lightweight nature, and resistance to environmental factors.
QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE, MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, GOVT. OF INDIA ON 21 JULY 2023 FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION
The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued an order, making it mandatory for all Resin treated compressed wood laminates to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, shall mandatorily carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence. In short, it has become obligatory for all the manufacturers of Resin treated compressed wood laminates, wherein in India or overseas, to immediately apply for BIS licence and obtain a valid BIS certification licence before that the last date of implementation of the order, i.e., 14 January 2024.
BIS CERTIFICATION SCHEME
The BIS Standards, IS 3513, establishes a comprehensive framework encompassing various quality parameters that Resin treated compressed wood laminates must adhere to. The Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Scheme is a vital framework established by the Indian government to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of products available in the market. This scheme aims to safeguard consumer interests by setting stringent benchmarks and guidelines that products must meet before they can be deemed compliant. BIS certification covers a wide range of industries and products, encompassing the entire gamut of industrial and manufacturing activity. Various steps involved in the BIS Certification process are enumerated below:
- Standard Identification: Manufacturers identify the relevant BIS standard that applies to their chosen product category. These standards outline the specific quality, safety, and performance requirements that the product must meet.
- Application Submission: Manufacturers submit an application for BIS certification to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), providing details about the product, its specifications, and the desired certification mark.
- Factory Inspection: BIS conducts an inspection of the manufacturer’s production facility to assess the quality control processes, infrastructure, and adherence to relevant standards.
- Sample Testing: BIS collects samples of the product from the manufacturer for testing in authorized BIS laboratories or recognized testing centers. These tests evaluate various parameters specified by the BIS standard.
- Certification Decision: Based on the satisfactory test results and compliance with standards, BIS decides whether to grant certification to the product. If approved, the manufacturer is issued a BIS certification license.
- Regular Monitoring: BIS monitors the manufacturing process of certified products through periodic audits and market surveillance to ensure ongoing compliance with quality control processes and standards.
