What Is the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)?
The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is a mandatory product certification programme under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. Any company — Indian or foreign — that wishes to import, manufacture, or sell a notified electronic or IT product in India must first obtain BIS CRS registration. The scheme currently covers 49 product categories, including:
- Mobile phones, laptops, and tablets
- Power adapters, chargers, and UPS systems
- LED lights and luminaires Printers, scanners, and set-top boxes
- Smart TVs and wearable devices
Selling notified products without registration is a legal violation. Penalties include import bans, product seizure, and financial liability.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does BIS CRS registration take?
End-to-end, the process typically takes 3 to 5 months — from sample submission to certificate grant. Timeline depends on the product category, laboratory queue, and speed of BIS query resolution. Omega QMS actively works to compress this wherever possible.
Can a foreign company register directly with BIS?
No. Foreign manufacturers must appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) — a registered Indian entity that holds the registration and is legally accountable for product compliance in India. Omega QMS can advise on AIR arrangements
Do international certifications (CE, FCC, UL) count towards BIS registration?
No. BIS requires independent testing at a BISrecognised laboratory in India against the applicable Indian Standard (IS), regardless of certifications held in other markets.
Does every product model need a separate registration?
In most cases, yes. Different model numbers or significant specification differences typically require separate registrations.
Omega QMS helps clients map their product portfolios accurately at the outset to avoid surprises.
What are the consequences of selling without BIS CRS registration?
Products sold without valid registration are in violation of Indian law. Consequences include import detention, product seizure, prohibition orders, and financial penalties. Customs authorities verify BIS registration for notified products at the import stage.
What happens after registration is granted?
Registration must be renewed before expiry. BIS also conducts factory surveillance at registered manufacturers. Omega QMS provides postregistration support to ensure ongoing compliance.
