OMEGA QMS PVT. LTD: PIONEERING BIS CERTIFICATION OF REVERSE OSMOSIS BASED POINT OF USE WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM FOR DRINKING PURPOSES AS PER IS 16240

INTRODUCTION

In an era where safe drinking water is becoming increasingly scarce due to contamination and overexploitation, the need for reliable water treatment systems is paramount. India, like many other densely populated countries, faces challenges in ensuring the quality of its drinking water amidst industrial effluents, agricultural run-offs, and groundwater depletion. Recognizing these challenges, the Indian Standard IS 16240:2023 was formulated to set stringent requirements for Reverse Osmosis (RO) based Point-of-Use (PoU) water treatment systems. Amidst this landscape, Omega stands as a trailblazer, leading the way towards BIS certification of water treatment products, ensuring safe drinking water for all.

SUMMARY OF INDIAN STANDARD IS 16240:2023

IS 16240:2023 addresses the pressing need for safe drinking water by focusing on RO-based PoU water treatment systems with a capacity of up to 50 liters per hour. The standard comprehensively covers design, construction, performance, and testing requirements to ensure the removal of total dissolved solids (TDS), physical, chemical, and microbiological contaminants from feed water. It outlines terminology, construction specifications, materials compliance, performance metrics, and testing protocols, leaving no stone unturned in guaranteeing the efficacy and safety of water treatment systems.

The standard mandates essential components such as sediment filters, adsorption media, RO membranes, booster pumps, and reject water control mechanisms, emphasizing the importance of each in achieving optimal water purification. It also allows for optional components like flushing mechanisms, UV disinfection chambers, and mineralizer/taste enhancer media, offering flexibility to manufacturers while maintaining strict quality standards.

Performance requirements include TDS reduction, chemical reduction, and microbiological reduction, with stringent limits for various contaminants such as arsenic, lead, fluoride, and pathogens like E. coli and viruses. Additionally, electrical safety, power supply compatibility, pressure tests, and routine maintenance guidelines are meticulously outlined to ensure long-term reliability and efficacy of the systems.

QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE, GOVT. OF INDIA ON 10 NOVEMBER 2023 FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION
