Omega QMS Facilitates Ease of BIS Certification under QCO for IS 302-1

Omega QMS Pvt. Ltd. has played a vital role in simplifying the BIS certification process under the Quality Control Order (QCO) for IS 302-1: Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances.

Previously, manufacturers had to test each individual model to obtain BIS certification. This process increased both time and certification costs. Omega submitted detailed technical recommendations and worked closely with authorities. As a result, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) revised the Product Manual (PM/IS 302 (Part 1)/IEC 60335-1), bringing in Grouping Guidelines to ease the certification process.

Key Highlights of the Revision:

  • Model Grouping Allowed: Manufacturers can now club models into groups/series based on technical similarities (e.g., product type, input supply nature, insulation class, and degree of protection).
  • Representative Testing: Only the highest and lowest input rating models within a group need to be tested for grant/change of licence.
  • Cosmetic Variants Simplified: Variants with only aesthetic changes (e.g., color or design) need not undergo separate testing.
  • Rotational Testing: During licence validity, all models in the scope will be tested in rotation as feasible.

This amendment reduces redundant testing and shortens certification timelines. Additionally, it provides regulatory relief to manufacturers while maintaining safety and compliance standards.

Omega QMS continues to lead from the front in navigating regulatory complexities and supporting the industry with efficient certification pathways.
