Government Extends Suspension of BIS Quality Control Order for n-Butyl Acrylate Until 31 July 2026

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, through the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, has extended the temporary suspension of the n-Butyl Acrylate (Quality Control) Order, 2021, providing continued relief from the mandatory BIS certification requirement until 31 July 2026.

The extension has been notified through S.O. 3729(E) dated 9 July 2026, amending the earlier notification that had suspended the Quality Control Order (QCO) until 10 July 2026.

Background

The n-Butyl Acrylate (Quality Control) Order, 2021, originally notified on 24 December 2021, mandates that n-Butyl Acrylate conform to the applicable Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) requirements before it can be manufactured, sold, or imported in India.

Earlier this year, the Government temporarily suspended the enforcement of the QCO due to global supply chain disruptions, which affected the availability of n-Butyl Acrylate in the Indian market. The latest notification extends this suspension by another three weeks to ensure uninterrupted supply of this critical industrial chemical.

What Has Changed?

The latest amendment simply replaces the suspension end date in the existing notification:

The underlying Quality Control Order remains in force, but its implementation will continue to remain suspended until the revised date.

Why Is This Important?

n-Butyl Acrylate is an important industrial chemical used in the manufacture of:

By extending the suspension, the Government aims to maintain adequate availability of the chemical in India while global supply chain challenges persist.

Business Impact

The notification provides temporary regulatory relief for businesses dealing with n-Butyl Acrylate.

For Importers

Importers can continue importing n-Butyl Acrylate without mandatory BIS certification until 31 July 2026, helping avoid potential supply disruptions.

For Manufacturers and Industrial Users

Industries dependent on n-Butyl Acrylate can continue sourcing the material without additional compliance requirements during the suspension period, supporting uninterrupted production.

Compliance Planning

Although the BIS certification requirement remains suspended for now, businesses should note that the QCO has not been withdrawn. Unless the Government issues another extension or amendment, the mandatory BIS compliance requirements are expected to resume after 31 July 2026.

Conclusion

The extension of the suspension under the n-Butyl Acrylate (Quality Control) Order, 2021 provides short-term certainty for importers and downstream industries by ensuring continued availability of this key industrial chemical.

Businesses involved in importing, manufacturing, or using n-Butyl Acrylate should continue monitoring regulatory developments and prepare for the eventual reinstatement of the BIS Quality Control Order once the temporary suspension expires.
