IS 1475 (PART 1): 2001 SELF-CONTAINED DRINKING WATER COOLERS  PART 1- ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND PERFORMANCE

IS 1475 (Part 1): 2001 prescribes the general constructional requirements, recommended standard sizes, methods of testing and rating, and installation of self contained drinking water coolers operated by electrically driven vapour compression type refrigerating machine with air-cooled condenser. Self-propelled water coolers are classified as: a) Pressure type water coolers, and b) Storage type water coolers while Pressure type water coolers are ordinarily of the two types a) Bubbler Type—The type of cooler employs a bubbler which projects stream of water so that it can be consumed without use of cups, glasses or other containers and b) Faucet Type—This type employs faucet or spout – suitable for filling cups, glasses or other containers.

Storage type water coolers shall ordinarily be any of the following types: a) Cooler which may store or cool water in the same container, and b) Cooler which may employ bottle or container for storing supply of water to be cooled. Such bottle or container is placed on or within the water cooler.  Among others standard prescribes the following performance parameters a) Insulation resistance tests, b) High voltage test, c) Cooling capacity rating test, and d) Maximum operating condition test

QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE, MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, GOVT. OF INDIA ON 25SEPTEMBER 2023 FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION

The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued an order, making it mandatory for all self-contained drinking water cooler to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, shall mandatorily carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence.  In short, it has become obligatory for all the manufacturers of self-contained drinking water cooler, whether in India or overseas, to immediately apply for BIS licence and obtain a valid BIS certification licence before that the last date of implementation of the order, i.e., 24March 2024.
