BIS Certification for Nuts, Bolts and Fasteners as per IS 6623:2004, 10238:2001 AND IS 12427: 2001
BIS Certification is a hallmark of quality, safety, and reliability in India, and it is essential for a wide range of products, including industrial fasteners. Three key Indian Standards (IS) that relate to high-strength structural nuts and steel fasteners are IS 6623:2004, IS 10238:2001, and IS 12427:2001. Each of these standards specifies the requirements for different types of fasteners, ensuring their quality and suitability for specific applications.
IS 6623: 2004 – HIGH STRENGTH STRUCTURAL NUTS
IS 6623:2004 specifies the requirements of large series hexagon, high-strength structural nuts of property class 8 and 10 in size range of M 12 to M 36 suitable for use in both friction type and bearing type of structural steel connections. Unless otherwise specified, the nuts shall be of product grade B as specified in IS 1367 (Part 2). The standard covers the specifications for dimensions, material, mechanical properties such as cantilever test
IS 10238:2001 – FASTENERS – THREADED STEEL FASTENER – STEP BOLTS FOR STEEL STRUCTURES
IS 10238:2001 This standard covers the requirements for step bolt used in steel structures including transmission towers to gain access to the top. Each bolt shall be supplied with two hexagon nuts. The step bolts shall be of product Grade C as specified in IS 1367 (Part 2). The hexagon nuts used with step bolts covered in this standard shall be of property class 5 and conforms to the requirements of IS 14394. The plain washers used on these bolts shall be of Type A punched washers type and conform to the requirements given in IS 2016 except the thickness of washers which shall be 5 + 1 mm. The standard covers the specifications for dimensions, material, mechanical properties such as cantilever test.
IS 12427: 2001 – FASTENERS – THREADED STEEL FASTENERS – HEXAGON HEAD TRANSMISSION TOWER BOLTS
IS 12427:2001 covers the requirements for hot dip galvanized hexagon head transmission tower bolts in the size range M12 to M24 for use in the construction of transmission towers, sub-stations and similar steel structures. 1.2 The bolts covered in this standard are not suitable for applications requiring improved low temperatures characteristics. Unless otherwise specified, the bolts shall be ofproduct grade C as specified in IS 1367 (Part 2). The bolt threads shall be in accordance with IS4218 (Parts 1 to 4) and prior to hot-dip galvanizing shall conform with Go and Not Go threaded ring gauges in accordance with IS 2334. The tolerance on threads shall be 8 g. The hexagon nuts used with these bolts shall conform to the requirements given in IS 14394. The plain washers used with these bolts shall be of Type A, punched washer type and shall conform to the requirements of IS 2016 except the thickness of washers which shall be 5 + 1 mm. The bolts shall be of property class 5.6, 5.8 or 8.8 as specified in IS 1367(Part 3) and shall be tested full size. The standard covers the specifications for dimensions, material, mechanical properties such as shear strength.
QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE, MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, GOVT. OF INDIA ON 21 JULY 2023 FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION
The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued an order, making it mandatory for all fasteners to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, shall mandatorily carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence. In short, it has become obligatory for all the manufacturers of fasteners, wherein in India or overseas, to immediately apply for BIS licence and obtain a valid BIS certification licence before that the last date of implementation of the order, i.e., 20 January 2024.
BIS CERTIFICATION SCHEME
The BIS Standards, IS 6623, IS 10238 and IS 12427, establishes a comprehensive framework encompassing various quality parameters that fasteners must adhere to. The Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Scheme is a vital framework established by the Indian government to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of products available in the market. This scheme aims to safeguard consumer interests by setting stringent benchmarks and guidelines that products must meet before they can be deemed compliant. BIS certification covers a wide range of industries and products, encompassing the entire gamut of industrial and manufacturing activity. Various steps involved in the BIS Certification process are enumerated below:
- Standard Identification: Manufacturers identify the relevant BIS standard that applies to their chosen product category. These standards outline the specific quality, safety, and performance requirements that the product must meet.
- Application Submission: Manufacturers submit an application for BIS certification to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), providing details about the product, its specifications, and the desired certification mark.
- Factory Inspection: BIS conducts an inspection of the manufacturer’s production facility to assess the quality control processes, infrastructure, and adherence to relevant standards.
- Sample Testing: BIS collects samples of the product from the manufacturer for testing in authorized BIS laboratories or recognized testing centers. These tests evaluate various parameters specified by the BIS standard.
- Certification Decision: Based on the satisfactory test results and compliance with standards, BIS decides whether to grant certification to the product. If approved, the manufacturer is issued a BIS certification license.
- Regular Monitoring: BIS monitors the manufacturing process of certified products through periodic audits and market surveillance to ensure ongoing compliance with quality control processes and standards.
