Subsequent to an operation of the thermal cut-out, the appliance shall be cooled to room temperature and cut-out reset. This shall constitute one cycle. The appliance shall be subjected to 4 such cycles without burning out of the heating element of the appliance. The appliance shall then satisfactorily withstand the endurance test. The resistance wire used for the heating element shall be so arranged as to maintain effective electrical contact with the connecting leads. Connections between the terminals or flexible cord and the element shall be made in a secure and durable manner. All connections and terminals shall be suitably insulated from one another. 3 Immersion water heaters of dip-in type shall be provided with a hook or other effective means made of non-ferrous non-corrosive material with a minimum thickness of 0.9 mm to facilitate supporting it on the side of the vessel in which it is to be immersed. All othere tests shall be done as per IS 302-2-201
IS 2082:2018 STATIONARY STORAGE TYPE ELECTRIC WATER HEATERS
This standard deals with the general, safety and performance requirements of electric storage water heaters for household and similar purposes and intended for heating water below boiling temperature, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 415 V for other appliances. Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard. Measurements of water temperature without withdrawal of water are made with a thermocouple placed inside the upper section of the container. The electrical energy consumed is measured by means of a watt-hour meter and recorded in kilowatt-hours to the nearest 0.01 kWh. Performance requirements as specified in IS 302-2-21 shall be applicable.
IS 17150:2019 MINI DOMESTIC WATER HEATER FOR USE WITH PIPED NATURAL GAS ( PNG )
This standard cover the requirements for instantaneous domestic water heater of nominal useful heat output less than 25 kW (based on gross calorific value), for use with Piped Natural Gases (PNG) at a working pressure of 21 mbar (21.41 gf/cm2). It is an inlet water controlled appliance. It specifies the main constructional and performance characteristics for the instantaneous domestic water heater. It also sets the appropriate test methods for evaluating test characteristics. Appliances for boiling water are not covered in this standard.. The materials used in the construction of the water heater shall be resistant to wear and deterioration occurring in the normal use. The copper and copper alloy forged and cast parts shall pass the mercurous nitrate test (season cracking test). Non-metallic materials normally in contact with the gas shall not change in weight or volume by more than 15 percent after being immersed in pentane for 72 h at room temperature. Gas inlet connection shall permit a rigid connection. All water connections shall be of copper or brass tube and have at least 6 mm inner diameter and 0.5 mm nominal wall thickness of the tube. The gas and water connections shall be situated at the base of the appliance. It shall be possible to connect the appliance to supply, which are in a plane parallel or perpendicular to the wall on which the appliance is fixed. The appliance shall have a flame failure device, controlling the admission of gas to the main burner and possibly to any ignition pilot. An appliance shall have an ignition device. Where the appliance is provided in the form of a pilot it shall be possible to light it easily with a matchstick or a special ignition device. The pilot shall be positioned in such a way that their products of combustion are evacuated ith those of the burner. While in operation the relative position of the pilot and burner shall not alter. The pilot burner shall be made of a material that shall not deteriorate under normal condition of use. It is essential that the pilot flame shall be seen either directly or by reflection. The ignition to the burners from pilot shall be smooth. Thermal efficiency of the water heater shall not be less than : a) 62 percent for water heaters with a nominal heat input exceeding 10 kW, and b) 60 percent for water heaters with a nominal heat input not exceeding 10 kW. While the appliance is in operation at full gas consumption and the appliance is in thermal equilibrium the flame shall be immediately reduced to the minimum possible and then brought back to the full size. The operation shall be repeated five times. No flash back shall occur during the test. This applies for all pressures from 20 gf/cm² to 25 gf/cm².There shall be no extinction of the flame on any of the burners operating at maximum consumption when the appliance is placed in a normal (not localized) current of air with a velocity of 2 m/s, as measured with a rotating vane anemometer. The location of the appliance relative to neighbouring walls and the direction of the draught shall be varied to correspond to likely conditions of appliance installation. This applies for all pressure from 1.9613 kN/m² to 2.452 kN/m² (20 gf/cm² to 25 gf/cm²).
THE GOVT.’S APPROACH TO QUALITY CONTROL
The Govt. of India periodically updates the Quality Control Orders (QCO), expanding its coverage to include more and more products. Recently Govt. of India has included water heaters in the ambit of QCO. One of the most significant provisions of this order is that the product imported into India must have a BIS License.
