BIS Certification for Air Filters for General Ventilation as per IS 17570 (PART1) : 2021
In an era where air quality is increasingly under scrutiny, the importance of ensuring clean and safe air for general ventilation cannot be overstated. As part of this endeavor, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced stringent regulations, notably IS 17570 (Part 1): 2021, governing air filters for general ventilation systems. The BIS certification ensures that air filters meet the necessary standards for efficiency, performance, and safety, contributing to healthier indoor environments. In this article, we delve into the significance of BIS certification for air filters and explore how Omega QMS Pvt Ltd simplifies the certification process.
UNDERSTANDING IS 17570 (PART1):2021
This Indian Standard IS 17570(Part 1):2021 establishes an efficiency classification system of air filters for general ventilation based upon particulate matter (PM). It also provides an overview of the test procedures, and specifies general requirements for assessing and marking the filters, as well as for documenting the test results. The test method described in this standard is applicable for air flow rates between 0.25 m3/s (900 m3/h, 530 ft3/min) and 1.5 m3/s (5 400 m3/h, 3 178 ft3/min), referring to a test rig with a nominal face area of 610 mm × 610 mm (24 inch × 24 inch). Filter elements used in portable room-air cleaners are excluded from the scope of this standard. The filter element shall be made of suitable material to withstand normal usage and exposures to those temperatures, humidity and corrosive environments that are likely to be encountered. The filter element shall be designed to withstand mechanical constraints that are likely to occur during normal use. The filter element shall be tested at its nominal air flow rate for which the filter has been designed by the manufacturer. The resistance to air flow (pressure differential) across the filter element is recorded at the test air flow rate. The initial fractional efficiency curve, Ei, of the unloaded and unconditioned filter element as a function of the particle size is measured at the test air flow rate.
DRAFT QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (TECHNICAL REGULATION) ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE, MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, GOVT. OF INDIA FOR MANDATORY BIS CERTIFICATION
The DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, has issued a draft Quality Control Order for consultation, seeking to make it mandatory for all air filters for general ventilation to be used in India, whether manufactured in India or imported from foreign countries, to undergo mandatorily BIS certification and thus carry the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards under a valid BIS licence.
BIS CERTIFICATION SCHEME
The BIS Standards, IS 17570 (Part 1):2021, establishes a comprehensive framework encompassing various quality parameters that fasteners must adhere to. The BIS Certification Scheme is a vital framework established by the Indian government to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of products available in the market. This BIS Certification scheme aims to safeguard consumer interests by setting stringent benchmarks and guidelines that products must meet before they can be deemed compliant. BIS certification covers a wide range of industries and products, encompassing the entire gamut of industrial and manufacturing activity. Various steps involved in the BIS Certification process are enumerated below:
- Standard Identification: Manufacturers identify the relevant BIS standard that applies to their chosen product category. These standards outline the specific quality, safety, and performance requirements that the product must meet.
- Application Submission: Manufacturers submit an application for BIS certification to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), providing details about the product, its specifications, and the desired certification mark.
- Factory Inspection: BIS conducts an inspection of the manufacturer’s production facility to assess the quality control processes, infrastructure, and adherence to relevant standards.
- Sample Testing: BIS collects samples of the product from the manufacturer for testing in authorized BIS laboratories or recognized testing centers. These tests evaluate various parameters specified by the BIS standard.
- Certification Decision: Based on the satisfactory test results and compliance with standards, BIS decides whether to grant certification to the product. If approved, the manufacturer is issued a BIS certification license.
- Regular Monitoring: BIS monitors the manufacturing process of certified products through periodic audits and market surveillance to ensure ongoing compliance with quality control processes and standards.
