BIS Certification for Electric Shredders under QCO 2026

Electric food shredders — used for shredding vegetables, cheese, and other food ingredients — are covered under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2026 — commonly referred to as QCO 2026. BIS certification is mandatory for all electric shredders before they can be sold or imported in India.

Covered Products

Electric Shredders
Electric Food Processors (related category)
Slicing Machines (related food preparation category)

Applicable Indian Standard

IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 — Household and Similar Electrical Appliances — Safety: Part 1 General Requirements (technically equivalent to IEC 60335-1: 2020).

Key Requirements Under Scheme-I

BIS licence under Scheme-I mandatory before any sale or import
Product testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory against IS 302 (Part 1): 2024
Factory inspection and audit by BIS
ISI marking required on every certified unit
Ongoing surveillance audits to maintain licence validity

Feed Tube and Blade Access Safety

Electric shredders present laceration risks through the feed tube and shredding disc assembly. BIS testing evaluates feed tube dimensions to prevent finger access to blades, interlock systems on the bowl and lid, and blade containment under fault conditions. Products where the feed tube diameter allows finger insertion into the shredding zone are a common testing failure point. Importers should verify feed tube safety dimensions before formal BIS submission.

Why This Category Matters

Electric shredders are widely used kitchen appliances in India, frequently bundled with food processors or sold as standalone units. Non-compliance after QCO 2026 implementation results in import rejection and market enforcement. Penalties apply under the BIS Act, 2016.

Compliance Dates

1st October 2026

1st January 2027
Small Enterprises
1st April 2027

Key Exemptions

Exemption 01

Export manufacturing

Goods manufactured domestically solely for export are exempt.

Exemption 02

R&D imports

Up to 200 units per year may be imported for R&D without BIS certification, provided they are not sold commercially. Year-wise records must be maintained.

Exemption 03

Existing stock

Declared stock held by a BIS-certified manufacturer (or one who has applied) may be sold for up to six months from the implementation date, subject to a declaration to BIS.

Conclusion

Electric shredders are explicitly listed under QCO 2026. Blade access safety validation is a critical pre-testing requirement. Importers and manufacturers must initiate BIS applications ahead of the October 2026 deadline.
