BIS Certification for Deep Fat Fryers and Frying Pans under QCO 2026

Electric deep fat fryers and frying pans are widely used in Indian homes, restaurants, and commercial food service operations. Under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2026 — commonly referred to as QCO 2026 — BIS certification is mandatory for all such appliances before they can be sold or imported in India.

Covered Products

Frying Pans, Deep Fat Fryers and Similar Appliances
Commercial Electric Doughnut Fryers and Deep Fat Fryers
Commercial Electric Multi-purpose Cooking Pans

Applicable Indian Standard

IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 — Household and Similar Electrical Appliances — Safety: Part 1 General Requirements (technically equivalent to IEC 60335-1: 2020).

Key Requirements Under Scheme-I

BIS licence under Scheme-I mandatory before any sale or import
Product testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory against IS 302 (Part 1): 2024
Factory inspection and audit by BIS
ISI marking required on every certified unit
Ongoing surveillance audits to maintain licence validity

Thermal Safety

Deep fat fryers operate at high temperatures with oil, making thermal safety a key design consideration. During assessment for BIS certification under the applicable Indian Standard (IS 302 Part 1), products are evaluated for compliance with relevant electrical and thermal safety requirements, including protection against overheating and abnormal operation where applicable. Manufacturers are advised to validate product performance against the applicable requirements before submitting their products for BIS certification.

Why This Category Matters

Deep fryers and frying appliances are widely used across household and commercial kitchens in India. The commercial segment — including doughnut fryers, griddles, and multi-purpose cooking pans — supplies the restaurant, hotel, and fast food sectors. Non-compliance after QCO 2026 implementation may disrupt both import channels and commercial supply chains, with penalties under the BIS Act, 2016.

Key Exemptions

Exemption 01

Export manufacturing

Goods manufactured domestically solely for export are exempt.

Exemption 02

R&D imports

Up to 200 units per year may be imported for R&D without BIS certification, provided they are not sold commercially. Year-wise records must be maintained.

Exemption 03

Existing stock

Declared stock held by a BIS-certified manufacturer (or one who has applied) may be sold for up to six months from the implementation date, subject to a declaration to BIS.

Conclusion

Deep fat fryers, frying pans, and commercial frying equipment are clearly listed under QCO 2026. The fire risk associated with high-temperature oil appliances makes this a priority compliance category. Manufacturers and importers must begin BIS applications immediately to avoid disruption after October 2026.
