BIS Certification for Outdoor Barbecues under QCO 2026

Electric outdoor barbecues — electrically powered grills and barbecue units designed for outdoor use — are covered under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2026 — commonly referred to as QCO 2026. BIS certification is mandatory for all electric outdoor barbecues before they can be sold or imported in India.

Covered Products

Outdoor Barbecues (electric)
Commercial Electric Griddles and Griddle Grills (related commercial category)

Applicable Indian Standard

IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 — Household and Similar Electrical Appliances — Safety: Part 1 General Requirements (technically equivalent to IEC 60335-1: 2020).

Key Requirements Under Scheme-I

BIS licence under Scheme-I mandatory before any sale or import
Product testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory against IS 302 (Part 1): 2024
Factory inspection and audit by BIS
ISI marking required on every certified unit
Ongoing surveillance audits to maintain licence validity

Outdoor Environmental Exposure

Outdoor barbecues are used in environments with exposure to rain, humidity, dust, and variable temperatures. BIS testing under IS 302 evaluates electrical safety under these outdoor conditions, including insulation resistance under humid conditions and protection against water ingress during use. Products designed for sheltered indoor or semi-outdoor use only may not meet the outdoor environmental exposure requirements. Importers should verify the product’s intended use environment and IP rating before formal BIS submission.

Why This Category Matters

Electric outdoor barbecues are imported for residential and commercial hospitality use in India. The growing popularity of outdoor dining and rooftop entertaining in Indian urban settings has increased demand for these products. Non-compliance after October 2026 results in import rejection and penalties under the BIS Act, 2016.

Compliance Dates

Key Exemptions

Exemption 01

Export manufacturing

Goods manufactured domestically solely for export are exempt.

Exemption 02

R&D imports

Up to 200 units per year may be imported for R&D without BIS certification, provided they are not sold commercially. Year-wise records must be maintained.

Exemption 03

Existing stock

Declared stock held by a BIS-certified manufacturer (or one who has applied) may be sold for up to six months from the implementation date, subject to a declaration to BIS.

Conclusion

Electric outdoor barbecues are explicitly listed under QCO 2026. The outdoor use environment adds specific electrical safety requirements around weathering and water ingress. Importers must verify their products meet these requirements and initiate BIS applications ahead of the October 2026 deadline.
